Overview of Blogging For Dummies

Starting a blog is a challenging but rewarding project if done right.

There are many steps that you need to take to get your blog off the ground.

In this article, I’ll share with you tips, tricks, and methods I’ve used to create blogs that are now generating a substantial amount of money every month.

You don’t need to be an expert in blogging to be able to start a blog.

When I say “blogging for dummies”, I truly mean it.

I was a dummy in blogging when I started out and now I’ve acquired the skills, knowledge, and expertise to be able to run my own profitable blogs but also share with you my tips on how to start a blog.

It may feel overwhelming when you are just starting out, but don’t let that prevent you from giving the blogosphere a shot.

Before we start, have you wondered what is a blog?

A blog is essentially a web journal where you post articles and present information to your audience in reverse chronological order.

Today, blogs are used by individuals to write about subjects and topics they are passionate about and businesses use blogs to drive traffic to their website to create brand awareness and sales.

Anyone, including yourself, could find a great reason to start a blog.

Keep reading as I will get into how to blog for dummies, coming up next…

How To Start A Blog For Dummies

To properly start a blog, you’ll need to go through several key steps.

Here is a snapshot of the different steps:

  • Find a blogging niche
  • Register your domain
  • Host your blog site
  • Install WordPress
  • Find a blog theme
  • Create content
  • Grow your audience
  • Monetize your blog

Let’s dive into each of these steps so you know what I mean.

Step 1: Find Your Blog Niche

Finding the right niche is a crucial step in starting your blog.

To start a successful blog, you’ll need to focus your attention on a particular subject so you can acquire the knowledge and expertise in that field.

If you write about a different topic every day, you may not succeed in driving traffic to your blog and eventually you may give up.

So how do you find the right niche?

The rule of thumb is that you should be passionate about the topic, you can write content that solves a particular problem or fills a need, your content is evergreen and not a short-term fad or trend, and most importantly a profitable one.

For example, on this blog, I write about earning passive income through blogging.

My objective is to inform, educate, and provide guidance to my audience on how to start a blog and make money with it.

The reason why you are currently reading this post is that you are perhaps a beginner at blogging and want to learn how to start a blog.

That’s the niche that I’m passionate about, enjoy writing about, blogging is something that is going to be there for years to come, and the niche is quite profitable.

Just to give you an idea of popular blogging niches, here are some for you to think about:

  • Parenting blogs
  • Hobby blogs
  • Technology blogs
  • Frugal living blogs
  • Do-it-yourself blogs
  • Personal finance blogs
  • Stock marketing Investing blogs
  • Real estate investing blogs
  • Blogs about blogging!

There are so many subjects out there, it’s up to you to find what you love.

Step 2: Register Your Domain

Once you’ve decided on what you are going to write about, you then need to register your domain.

The domain is the web address that users will type to get to your blog or see on the search engine results page (something like: https://mydomainname.com).

Finding the right domain name is also an important consideration as it’s the name that people will associate with your blog.

My blog here is called “https://passive-income.zone” where I chose the terms “passive income” to appear in my domain name.

This is crucial for me as the entire objective of my blog is to provide my audience with ways and methods to make passive income.

Anyone seeing the name of my blog (my domain name) can immediately tell that this site is probably about how to make passive income.

You can use popular domain name registrars to search for and purchase your domain name.

Step 3: Find A Hosting Service

Once you’ve registered your blog’s domain name, the next step is to decide where you will host your blog.

You’ll need web hosting services.

For your website and blog to be visible and accessible to the world, you’ll need to have your website files hosted on a server (that you own or that you can rent from a web hosting company).

If you don’t host your blog, people typing in your blog domain name will get an error message telling them that there’s nothing there.

You can find different types of hosting services with varying degrees of bells and whistles.

If you are just starting out, you don’t need to get an expensive hosting service.

By investing between $5 to $10 a month, you can find reliable, fast, and quality web hosting services.

Step 4: Install WordPress

Ok, now you know what niche you intend to target, you have found and registered your domain name, you have found and signed up for web hosting services, amazing…

The next step is to install WordPress on your blog.

WordPress is a system you install into your web host allowing you to access the backend of your blog, write and publish content, and manage your website.

It’s like your blog cockpit or driver dashboard.

WordPress is the most widely used and probably the best blogging platform out there today.

Statistics show that more than 95% of blogs in the United States are operated using WordPress.

Many web hosting service providers allow you to easily install WordPress through one-click installation features, so it should not be difficult.

You can also install WordPress manually if you are a little bit more knowledgeable from a technical perspective.

Step 5: Purchase A Blog Theme

With your WordPress platform installed, you will need to design the appearance of your blog.

You have three options.

One way is to design the blog yourself (this option is probably not useful to you if you were looking to start a blog for dummies).

The next option is to hire a freelancer or web design agency to create and build a blog for you.

This can be a more expensive option but you have the advantage of being able to create a blog in a potentially customized fashion suiting your personality.

The third option, which is what I recommend, is to purchase a blog theme.

A “theme” is a pre-built blog design (it’s like a pre-built home that you buy and have delivered at a specific location).

There are millions of themes out there ranging in prices, complexity, and quality.

Most bloggers do not create their own blog appearance from scratch but rather purchase a theme.

You can find themes of different colors, different styles, for ecommerce, for blogs, and for all sorts of things.

What’s great about themes is that you can also configure them in a way that suits your personality (some themes offer extensive customization options).

My blog here is built on a theme that I purchased.

Step 6: Create Awesome Content

At this point, all the “technical” work in setting up your blog is done.

You have your niche, your domain, your web hosting, you are on WordPress, and you’ve purchased your theme.

Now, the marathon to success begins.

This is when you will ask about writing a blog for dummies!

You should not embark on the journey of blogging if you are going to do it for a few months.

If you are serious about starting a blog, you should keep in mind that over 95% of those who start their blog project end up abandoning it.

The 5% that persevere end up succeeding and earning extra cash and passive income from their blogs.

To succeed, you need to write amazing content that is useful to your audience, consistently.

When I started blogging, I wrote on average one long blog post a day and it took me about 10 months before I earned a single penny out of all the effort I put in.

If you write about something that people are interested in reading, can solve a problem they have, allows them to take advantage of an opportunity, or entertains them, you will succeed.

This blog post is intended to help you solve a problem or take advantage of an opportunity.

In other words, if you have already decided to start a blog but you do not know how to go about doing, I provide you with an overview of the steps you need to take to start a blog as a beginner.

If you don’t know anything about blogs, are exploring the idea of blogging, and want to know how easy or complicated it is, the content here is going to provide you useful information allowing you to take advantage of the blogging opportunity.

Step 7: Grow Your Audience

When starting out as a new blogger, you should focus on writing about topics that can generate traffic to your site.

If you write about things that people are not interested in reading about, you will not get much traffic.

Without traffic, even the best content in the world will not have any readership.

There are many techniques and methods that you can use to grow your audience and traffic to your blog, such as:

  • Writing about topics that interest people
  • Sharing your blog posts with your family and friends so they can share them with others
  • Writing content that is easy to consume and digest
  • Doing proper keyword research to find the best topics to write about

I have grown my audience to my blogs by doing keyword research to understand what people are typing into Google and other search engines on the topic of passive investing.

You are probably here on my blog as you may have typed in a search keyword or key phrases that I had in mind when I was writing this blog.

There are great keyword research tools out there that can help you take your blog to the next level, be sure to check out the best keyword research tools that I recommend.

Another key aspect in growing your audience is to learn and understand SEO.

SEO stands for “search engine optimization”.

Through SEO, you can have search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, or other present your website on the first page of the search results.

Statistics show that nearly everyone will end up click on a link presented on the first page of Google or the search engine results (very few will go to see results on the second page, and less on the third page).

To get traffic to your blog organically and sustainably, you need search engines to find your content relevant and useful enough for its users to be presented on the first page.

Learn everything you can about SEO so you can have all your blog posts hit the first page of search engines.

Step 8: Monetize Your Blog

You’ve done everything perfectly so far, now it’s time to reap the reward for your hard work.

Let’s face it, for most of you, you are looking to start a blog to make money.

If that’s the case, then monetizing your blog is key to getting you a constant and steady stream of passive income.

There are many ways you can make money from blogging.

The most successful bloggers make millions of dollars a year (that’s right, millions of dollars).

For example, Peter Cashmore started Mashable and makes a whopping $7.2 million a year!

I’m not saying that as a new blogger you will make that much money to start with, but just like any business, you have the potential to make large sums of money.

The easiest way to monetize your blog is to through display advertising.

Display advertising is the process of allowing advertisers to present advertisements on your blog page when a user clicks on your post.

The more you are able to show ads, the more money you can make (it’s that simple).

With a high volume of traffic, your blog will be literally printing you money every month!!

Another way to make a significant amount of money is by signing up for affiliate marketing programs.

Affiliate marketing is the process of you promoting someone’s products and services and in exchange, you get a commission whenever there is a sale done.

You can sell digital products, online courses, offer premium content to paying members, and so much more.
