How Do Rappers Make Money

Wondering how rappers are able to make money and earn their living, sometimes really well?

In this article, I’m going to break down the methods successful rappers use to make money and build their wealth.

There are many that get into the music business as starting rappers with the aspiration of making it big.

Unfortunately, there are many rappers that will not make as much as they had in their minds.

However, to those that are determined, disciplined, and who are willing to put in the effort to make it, there are many ways that you can make money.

Keep reading as I’m about to tell you different methods used by rappers to make money.

Ways How Rappers Make Money

Rappers can make money in a variety of ways such as from record sales, live performances, tours, music videos, and other methods.

I will break down the question “how do rappers make money?” by going over the actual methods they use to generate cash.

Album Sales

One way for rappers to make money is to sell their music albums.

Although album sales used to be a much greater source of income in the past decades than today, for rappers it still remains a viable way of making money.

Live Performances

To those rappers who are able to get live performances, tours, and shows can make a good amount of money.

Even though many consumers can stream concert videos, shows, and tours online, it is incredible how many people will take the opportunity to purchase tickets to attend a show in person.

Royalties

Rappers who are able to produce copyrightable material can certainly make money from royalties by licensing their work.

A rapper is an artist or a professional just like any other professional in the music business and he or she can turn their passion and talent into a regular stream of income.

You can generate royalties by writing or composing the rap songs, creating the sound recording or audio for a rap song, or both.

YouTube Monetization

One of my personal favorite ways of making money is through YouTube.

Every day, billions of videos are being viewed and consumed online and YouTube has a large market share.

Anyone able to make engaging videos has the potential of making a lot of money through the YouTube monetization channel, and this includes rappers.

Rappers can make videos rapping, talking about their experience as a rapper, engaging with their audience in a unique way, and can develop an audience allowing them to generate cash.

Rappers have the potential of earning passive income through YouTube monetization and increasing their revenues by engaging with their followers and audience.

Passive income can be earned using pre-roll video ads, in-stream ads, and bumper ads.

I have personally developed different streams of income online and that’s why I have founded this blog strictly on the topic of passive income as it’s a powerful way of making money.

Streaming Services

With so many music streaming platforms out there and so many people using such services, rappers have the potential of making money by having their songs downloaded through such services.

You have platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Google Play, and Deezer which are just a few options.

You’ll need to be careful how much you have to pay on average per stream to these platforms so you’re comfortable with the cost.

For many rappers and artists, they find that it’s more challenging for new and upcoming rap artists to make money this way but you won’t know unless you try.

Advertising

More popular rappers are able to make money through advertisements and brand sponsorships.

Rappers have a much greater appetite to make money this way as their end goal is to make as much money as possible.

Other types of artists will be more careful about their associations with labels and sponsorships but rappers have less of a hesitation.

Merchandise Sales

The more people get to know you and want to hear your music, the more they are likely to buy merchandise related to you as a rapper.

Famous rappers and many who are on the rise quickly find ways of generating additional revenues by selling merchandise.

Merchandise can be anything such as caps, t-shirts, glasses, balls, accessories, or anything else.

Famous rappers may get into perfumes and other types of products.

Digital Downloads

Another of my personal favorite ways rappers can make money is through digital downloads of their products on their own websites.

If you put in the time, effort, and perhaps some investment to build your own website where you can offer your music to your audience for a small feel, you can make money through digital downloads.

You can also make more money through email subscriptions, paid subscriptions, and other forms of website monetization techniques.

I have personally built sites that I have monetized driving me thousands of dollars every month.

I’m not saying this to brag but I just want to tell you that you can do it.

If you are not sure and need to get started somewhere, I may be able to help you, so feel free to reach out.

Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is not a way for you to access the capital you need to grow your rapping business.

There are crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and GoFundMe that allow independent rappers use of crowdfunding projects.

You may be able to raise the capital you need to get your music project off the ground.

Reproduction Rights

Another way a rapper may earn some money is through reproduction rights.

When physical CDs or multimedia are sold and distributed with reproduction rights, that will allow others to play your music or videos while in return giving you some of the proceeds.

Start A Blog

If you are a rapper and you enjoy writing, you should most certainly consider starting a blog.

You can start a blog about your passion for rap, how you play, your experiences, your shows, your achievements, your struggles, and so on.

Over time, your blog can bring more and more traffic to your site where people get to learn about you, see who you are, and eventually even make purchases directly from you.

I have personally started a portfolio of blogs as a hobby where I generate thousands of dollars per month.

There is no doubt that you can drive passive revenue being a rapping artist and a blogger!

You’ll need to get yourself a domain name, web hosting, and music blog theme to get your site to go live.

Then you’ll need to write engaging content in a way that not only your readers will love but also optimized for search engines (SEO optimized content).

How Do Rappers Make Money FAQs

Let’s look at a few questions related to how rappers make money.

How Do Rappers Get Paid

The traditional ways rappers can get paid are through album sales, touring, and merchandise.

However, today, there are more modern ways rappers can make money and get paid, such as through digital downloads, YouTube, and streaming services.

How do unsigned rappers make money

Unsigned rappers make money by promoting their own music, building their own audience, and catering to the needs of their own fans.

Finding clever ways to make money can certainly help.

One way that aspiring and unsigned rappers make money is to build an audience around themselves online (not necessarily as a rapper).

Rappers will find complementary niches to build an audience and will then promote themselves as a rapper to their audience.

How do rappers get paid for shows

Playing gigs can be a good way for rappers to make a profit.

What you need to do is to find venues allowing you to rap where you can make some money off the ticket sales and cover charges for the night.

Not only do you make money by performing but you have the potential of getting known and sell your merchandise.

Look for venues in your area where they showcase rappers and see how you can get booked for a night.

You may also look into your network to see if someone can refer you as a gigging artist.

How can I make money off of my music as an amateur rapper

As an amateur rapper, you’ll need to be creative to make money off your music.

Starting a blog, a podcast, or a YouTube channel can be an inexpensive way for you to start making money not directly with your music but relating to your music.

Once you get yourself on the map online, you can use your blog, YouTube channel, website, and other digital assets to build an audience around yourself.

Ultimately, you can sell your music to them through digital downloads, promote yourself for shows, sell merchandise and start growing your music business this way.
