How Long Does It Take To Make Money Blogging
If you are asking yourself the question how long does it take to make money blogging, it means that you are considering starting a blog and earn some real hard cash!
This is great news.
To immediately answer your question, I can tell you that you can start earning money from your blog within less than a year if you follow certain best practices and you dedicate your time.
I say this from personal experience as I have multiple blogs on various topics and I was able to monetize my blogs within nine months to a year from their launch.
In this article, I will provide you a more detailed response on the time it takes to make money from blogs.
Your Time Investment
The first thing that you’ll need to consider is how much time you will devote to blogging.
The more time investment you put, the faster you are likely to see results.
What I mean by this is simple.
Blogs are intended to provide your users with useful information, great content, a solution to their problem, and so on.
If you consistently write articles (either long-form articles or shorter ones), you can expect to make money blogging.
For example, when I started blogging, I put in around 35 hours per week although I had a full-time job (I didn’t mind it as I love writing and I loved the idea of making money writing).
On the other hand, if you only put 5 hours a week blogging, you should not expect to make passive income anytime soon.
Consider blogging as a business.
It’s not going to be easy to beat the competitors, to make sacrifices, and to put in the sweat and energy (we all have a life and responsibilities), but those who do it (and consistently) can reap the reward.
How You Monetize Your Blog
Another aspect that is crucial in determining how long it may take for you to start earning an income from your blog is the way you monetize your blog.
To “monetize your blog” refers to the various methods you use to generate money from your blog.
The easiest way to making money from blogs is to sell advertisement spaces on your blog.
This means that you allow advertisers to post advertisements on your blog posts and, in return, you earn some revenues.
Selling ads on your blog is very easy and can help you generate decent income but it’s not the most profitable manner to monetize your blog.
Once you have greater traffic and have built yourself an audience, you can start making money in other ways like affiliate marketing.
In addition to display ads and affiliate marketing, there are many ways you can monetize your blog, such as:
- Selling online courses
- Selling digital products
- Write sponsored posts
- Create a membership site
You should not expect to make lots of money quickly.
Blogging is more like a marathon than a race.
If you don’t have the patience and perseverance to continue putting the time and effort into building your blog even though you are not earning any money or important income, you risk not making it.
The key to your success is to continue working hard and it and eventually, with good technique, strategy, and effort, money will come.
Your Content Quality
Successful sites that earn a lot of money have great content.
Setting a blog, in itself, is not a profitable activity.
However, if you build a blog that helps your audience, provides valuable content, helps solve a problem, or provides a solution to your audience, you are likely to make money on a long term basis.
The blogging business is not based on how much content you can write in the shortest period of time.
Rather, you must write content that is specifically catering to the needs of your audience.
Successful bloggers develop the skill to write great content for their audience, no matter the niche.
There are ways how to write blog posts in an effective and strategic way.
They learn core skills and abilities that they are able to deploy on any blog, no matter what industry, no matter the niche, and succeed at it.
The better content you write, the more likely you can start making money faster with your blog.
Your Keyword Research and SEO
Another crucial variable that should be considered that makes the difference between one blogger making money in six months versus another one in two years is keyword research and SEO.
SEO stands for “search engine optimization”.
The notion of making money and SEO are inseparable.
If you are not familiar with SEO or do not write your articles in light of proper SEO, your audience will not be able to find you online.
Search engine optimization allows you to write a blog article and eventually appear on the first page of search engine result pages.
You will not make money (even with the best article in the world) if you cannot make it on the first page of search engines or your audience cannot find you online.
Doing proper keyword research and writing articles in light of the best SEO strategies is key to your blog’s success.
When you do your keyword research, you can find keywords with lower competition, high search volumes, and relevant to your audience.
Then, you write your article by implementing various SEO strategies to ensure search engines find you relevant, credible, and authoritative on the topic.
With good keyword research and SEO, you will get a high volume of traffic to your website (organically) directly translating into more money for you.
How Long It Took My Blog To Make Money
You can find many bloggers online who share their income reports so you can get a better idea.
Some show that within a few months they were able to start generating an income while others took perhaps nearly two years.
Although I can’t guarantee that all the published income reports are accurate, I can tell you about my own experience.
I don’t publish my income report as I don’t think that you should be impressed by the numbers to consider the article as useful or valuable.
With that being said, here is my real-life experience in earring money from my first blog:
- For the first eight months, I did not earn any revenues (as a new blogger, you make mistakes, you get discouraged, or you don’t monetize well, and that’s the reality of life)
- My first blog income was a whopping $0.03 from Google AdSense!!
- I exceeded $100 per month as of the 13th month
- I exceeded $500 as of my 15th month
- I exceeded $1,000 per month as of my 18th month
As you can see, with my first blog, it took me literally a year and a half to start making $1,000.
Keep in mind that this income is only from display ads and does not include affiliate marketing commissions or other types of revenues.
Now, I have a portfolio of websites.
With the experience that I have acquired over the years, when I start a new blog, I know exactly how to approach it.
I know what are the mistakes that had cost me time and money in the past and I avoid making the same mistakes.
With the best practices I’ve learn by falling over on my face, my new blogs get to money faster as I’m more targetted and laser-focused.
Just like sports or school, you can only get good at something by actually practicing, falling down and getting back up.
Making Money By Blogging Tips
Now that you have a better idea of how long it may take you to make passive income from blogging, let me give you a few concrete, actionable, and real tips to help you make money faster.
Commit Yourself
You want to make money, then commit yourself to it.
Let me cut it to the chase, if you are going to start a blog, relentlessly work on it for two to three months and abandon the project because you could not see any results, you are doomed.
Committing yourself means that in your mind you are going in for the long haul.
Let me tell you, when I started my first blog, there were times after months and months of consistently putting 35 to 40 hours per week (in addition to my full-time job), I was not seeing any results whatsoever.
I was so discouraged.
I did not know if I was on the right track.
However, I did not give up.
I’m grateful for the fact that I did not give up as today I have built myself a portfolio of blogs that are earning me passive income which is absolutely wonderful.
So if you are going to do it, be ready for the marathon.
Treat Blogging As A Business
Starting a blog to make money is like starting a business to make money.
You may get the impression that blogging is easy as there are thousands of people on the web that present it that way for the sake of selling their online courses or their own money-making interest.
To earn money from a blog is not easy.
It is definitely feasible and anyone can do it but it’s not a walk in the park.
You’ll need to find a hosting company, build your website (or blog), do keyword research, identify topics to write about, write great content, publish your content, and so on.
You will likely need to put in some money of your own (your initial investment) and then manage your blogging business.
Pick A Niche
A “niche” is the particular subject matter of your blog.
Picking the right niche can make a huge difference in how long you can expect to generate money from your blog.
If you pick a low competition niche, you may potentially make money faster than going head-to-head with the major players competing in the space.
For example, if you are looking to write a blog about personal finance, you are more likely to earn an income if you discuss a specific niche (like how to invest in dividend stocks) than target the entire personal finance space competing against companies putting in millions of dollars in their website and blog.
Define Your Target Audience
Once you have found your niche, try to understand who is your audience.
If you want your blog to make money for you, you should know to who you are writing.
Once you know your target audience, you’ll know what information they need, what problems they may have, and how you can solve their problem.
For example, if your niche is dividend-paying stocks, your audience may be investors who are looking for a safe way to invest their money, they may be looking for investment advice, their intention is to either build wealth or save money for a specific project, and so on.
Once you know what your audience wants, you can then write content that targets them in a direct and meaningful way.
Choose Evergreen Content
Another great piece of advice if you want your blog articles to consistently make money for you, long-term, is to write on evergreen content.
Evergreen content is a type of content that does not need to remain fresh forever.
It’s a type of content that has a lasting value.
For example, if you write “news” type of articles, the content will likely need to be fresh for people to be interested in reading it.
However, if you write content like how to make a personal budget, or investing tips, or ways to earn passive income, your article can remain valuable for years to come.
Build An Email List
Building an email list can influence the speed at which you can begin making money from your blog.
An email list allows you to reach more people whenever you write your post thereby generating more traffic to your website.
However, what’s even more interesting with email lists is that you can segment your audience by their preferences, their interests, geography and so on and offer them more relevant content.
For example, a person who signed up for your email list because they were interested in an article you wrote about making money from blogs will tend to prefer articles on blogs and money than articles about stock market investments.
Eventually, you can even expand your monetization sources by selling your own online courses, memberships, or digital products.
Create A Content Schedule
You’ve started a blog and have put in the time and effort.
What can you do to stay focused?
How can you write content that will be relevant to your audience?
A content schedule is your best friend!
A content schedule is a plan that you will create for yourself where you clearly write down what article you will write on what day.
If you are strategic about the articles you write, your content, your keywords, and your overall monetization strategy, you can accelerate the speed at which you generate traffic to your site, and consequently the time it will take for your blog to become profitable.
Learn Affiliate Marketing
To take your blog revenues to a new level, you must learn affiliate marketing.
You already have a blog that drives good traffic to your website.
You are writing about a particular topic.
By finding affiliate programs that have a close connection with your blog topic, can provide additional value to your audience, and can solve their problem, you stand to make more money with your blog.
For example, on my blog here, I write passive income (my favorite topic in the world!).
One of the topics that I cover is how to make money from blogs.
In this context, if my audience is interested in starting a blog, I can augment my blog revenues by helping my audience further in guiding them relating to:
- Finding the best website hosting companies
- Helping them find keyword research tools
- The WordPress platform
- Best blog plugins
If I apply for the affiliate programs offered by website hosting companies or other and help them generate a sale by helping my own audience, it’s a win-win situation for everyone.
My audience wins because they are able to rely on my advice to make money from their blog, my affiliated company wins as they generate a sale, and I win as I earn a commission by helping my audience.
Use Blogging Tools
To start a good blog and scale, you’ll need to use good blogging tools.
Identifying the right tools for the job can make a big difference in how much time it can take you to really start earning money from your blog.
If a car mechanic did not have the right tools to do his or her job, it would not be possible for them to make money effectively.
The same is true for blogs.
If you don’t have the right tools to make money, you will not have a good chance to really earn good money from your blog.
