More and more people are listening to music and streaming music from various online platforms.
Starting a music blog can get you access to a very large market where you can find your niche and grow.
According to studies, music streaming has grown over the years.
Approximately 89% of the respondents to an important survey indicated that they use on-demand streaming services and 64% of them listen to music through audio streaming devices.
There are a lot of “music” consumers out there that you can target with your music or song blog.
Having said that, starting a music blog is probably what’s right for you.
What is a music blog you may ask?
A music blog is a type of blog where you discuss various topics related to music, such as:

Let’s face it, if you are going to start a music blog, you’ll need to be ready to face a lot of competition out there.
The music industry is extremely competitive and cut-throat so you’ll need to be strategic about your blog for music.
If you are a musician, an artist, have worked in the music industry, have your own music studio, or have a music background, you may have expertise or knowledge that others may be interested in discovering.
If you are just starting out in music, you’ll need to work hard to make it happen (but it’s possible) with enough discipline, hard work, and some luck).
What’s more is that you can make money by music blogging.
What I love about blogs is that you can make a nice passive income to make extra cash or even live full-time on your blog about music.

Ready to learn how to start a music blog today?
Let’s dive right in!
Step 1: Select Your Music Blog Niche
The first thing you need to think about when looking to get a blog started related to music is to decide on your blog niche.
Music Blog Niche
“Music” is a broad topic.
You should not just start a blog by randomly writing about music.
You should think about what you are going to write about and be strategic about it.
Brainstorm a few music blog ideas that interest you.
Do you want to write about music equipment and instruments?
Do you want to start a blog for musicians or beginners looking to get introduced to music?
Do you prefer sharing your personal views and opinion on music?
Music Blog Ideas
To help you get started, here are some ideas for you to create your music blog.
Consider writing about the following:
- The music business
- Music technology
- Do-it-yourself music
- Best music
- Musical culture
- Artists
- Albums
- Musical shows
- Merchandise
- Music genre
- Music software
- Life of a musician
- Celebrities
Your Audience
Choose a niche to start blogging so you know to which audience you are catering.
Depending on the audience that you may want to target, you’ll need to adapt your music blogging to cater to what interests them.
You may want to position your blog to talk about music in different countries, concerts, music produced with the latest technology, local, national or international artists, musical bands, or other.
By starting with a core focus or niche, you’ll start acquiring an audience that will eventually keep coming back to your blog for more content.
Then, as your audience and readership grow, you can start expanding into new music blogging niches (and more competitive ones).
Consider sharing your knowledge on music, write reviews, talk about the instruments you know how to use.
Be creative and find a niche that you are comfortable writing about and that you have something of value to share with your audience.
To get inspiration, you may want to look through different music blogs out there and see what they write about.
Here are some tips for you to find your niche in music:
- What is the objective of your blog
- What information do you want to share with your audience
- What are the top music blogs writing about
- In what way can you provide value to your blog visitors
Step 2: Find Your Music Blog Domain Name
Once you’ve selected your niche, the next step is to think about registering your music blog domain name.
The “domain name” is your blog’s web address.
That’s the address that your audience will type to view your blog.
My blog’s domain name is “PassiveIncome.Zone” as I chose a name that is relevant to the topic I write about (making money passively)
Domain Extension
If you can find a .com domain extension that fits your blog topic, you are in business.
For example, “RockMusic.com” would be a great choice (I’m not sure if this name is taken but this is just an example).
If you can’t find a .com extension, try to find one that you are comfortable with.
Within the music space, there are other types of extensions such as .music or .rock that may work.
However, the most popular domain extension on the web is .com.
Domain Name
Your blog domain name should be broad enough that it will allow you to expand the musical topics you cover over time.
For example, if you start with a music genre of Rock, maybe you want your name to be broad enough to allow you to get into rock, country, R&B, hip hop, or other types of popular music genres.
Don’t register for a domain that is too specific or narrow.
That will not help you in the long run if you want to move beyond your initial blog topic.
Choose something like “Music History” or “American Music” if you want to focus on this specific topic on your blog but keep it relatively broad enough.
Another key aspect to consider is to keep your domain name as short as you can.
The shorter your URL, the easier it will be for your audience to remember your blog’s address.
Sometimes, it may be difficult to find the perfect name for your blog on music.
In that case, you can get creative by adding qualifiers or additional words like “The Music Blogger” instead of “Music Blogger” alone.
Domain Naming Tips
Here are some tips in choosing your domain name:
Look for a .com extension (if possible).
For example, “Folk Music.com”, “Music Instruments.com”.
Considering choosing a name that is relatively broader than the topic you have in mind to start blogging about.
For example, “Electronic Music Blog”.
Keep your domain name short and to the point.
Use alliterations like words that sound the same or have the same letter.
For example, “Music Mania” or “Musical Madness”.
Add qualifying words or extra words like “The” or “Insider”.
For example, “The Land of Music” or “Music Insider”.
If you really have no idea what to name your music blog, you can opt for a name generation tool such as Instant Domain Search and Lean Domain Search to help you out.
When choosing your domain name, try to be as creative as you can, think of the future of your blog, and in which direction you may want to go.
Don’t try to find the most perfect name and get stuck at this stage.
Spend some time to find the right domain name but don’t overdo it.
Be sure to consult my step-by-step guide on how to buy your domain name for beginners in a cheap and affordable manner.
Popular Music Blogs
If you need more inspiration to find amazing ideas to blog about or find the core focus of your blog, be sure to look at popular music blogs for inspiration.
Here are some of the popular music blogs:
- Pitchfork
- Your EDM
- Consequence of Sound
- Metal Injection
- EDM.com
- Song Exploder
- Trap Music Blog
- Rap-Up
- UnitedMasters
- Pandora Blog
Domain Name Considerations
Once you have found your name, you should buy your domain name to ensure that it’s yours.
You can work with many domain name registrars to purchase the domain suitable for you.
Once you’ve purchased your domain, make sure you renew your domain name once the term of your purchase expires to avoid losing it.
Here are a few considerations when choosing your music domain name:
- Is your name broad enough to cover many topics
- Do you have a short and relevant domain name
- Could you find .com alternative names
- Is your domain name easy to remember
Step 3: Choose Your Web Hosting Service Provider
Once you chose your blog name and were able to purchase your domain name, you now need to get yourself web hosting services.
Every website on the Internet needs to be hosted.
A web host is a place where your website files reside (like the land on which a house is build).
There are many companies offering “hosting” services where you can find amazing and reliable web hosting.
Essentially, a web hosting company provides you with an online “space” where you can house your blog.
Do you really need to work with a hosting company?
The short answer is, yes.
You need to have a good web hosting service so that your blog can be up and running all the time and accessible to the world (and Internet users).
There are many amazing web hosting services out there that can get you started with a few dollars a month and offer you quality and reliable services.
For as little as $5 to $10 a month, a web hosting service provider can manage the hosting of your blog avoiding that you go through the pains and hassles.
I have a step-by-step tutorial on how to host your website, so be sure to check it out!
Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you select the best possible web hosting plan:
- Is your web hosting company reliable
- You should not pay too much if you are just starting a blog
- Do you have uptime guarantees given by your provider
- Do you have a dashboard to control the backend of your server
Step 4: Select Your Blogging Platform
Now, let’s discuss what blogging platform that you need.
You have several blogging platform options, such as:
- Free blogging platform
- Paid blogging platform
- WordPress (for self-hosting)
WordPress
Although you have various options, my recommendation is that you create a WordPress music blog.
WordPress is a system that allows you to manage the backend of your blog (consider it to be your blog cockpit).
It’s like the car that will allow you to drive on the blogging road.
I recommend that you use WordPress for multiple reasons:
- It’s free
- It’s user friendly
- Over 60% of all websites in the world are built over WordPress
- You can extend its functionalities through countless awesome plugins
- You can purchase tons of great-looking music blog themes build for WordPress
- You can use WordPress to monetize your blog
- You can expand into an e-commerce business
Free Blogging Platforms
If you don’t go with WordPress, you have the option of going with free blogging platforms.
Using free blogging platforms may not be ideal for you to start your music blog (unless you really don’t like WordPress for some reason).
With a free blocking platform, you should consider that:
- You will not have the flexibility and richness of features as you do with WordPress
- You have less freedom on your site design
- You will not be able to make money and monetize to your full potential
I don’t personally recommend that you use a free blogging platform if you’re looking to start blogging about music seriously for the following reasons:
- You may not get ranked as well on the first page of search engines
- You do not own your blog
- When you’re ready to make money with your blog, you will be limited in your options
- Your blog will not have a professional look and feel
- You may not be able to extend the features and capabilities of your site
- You end up promoting the free blogging platform through all your efforts instead of your own blog
Unless you have no money at all and don’t feel like learning WordPress (which is pretty user-friendly), then you should consider a free blogging platform.
Paid Blogging Platforms
You may elect to go with a paid blogging platforms such as Wix, Squarespace, or other.
Using a paid blogging platform or content management system can get the job done but why pay for something that may not perform as well as the far superior (and free) WordPress platform.
If you are new to blogging and you want to start a blog giving you the ability to scale, I’d tell you to go with WordPress hands down.
You are better off self-hosting your blog than paying for the service or using a basic free blog platform.
Check out my step-by-step tutorial on how to install WordPress on your blog and you’ll be up and running in no time!
Step 5: Choose A Music Blog Theme
To have a professional-looking music blog, you’ll need to get yourself a blog theme.
Now, what is a blog theme?
A theme is essentially a website template or a template that will define the look and feel of your blog.
There are countless themes out there built for websites and blogs.
You can find website themes on food, sports, poetry, business, arts, personal finance, you name it…
The biggest advantage of using a theme as a template to build your website is that you don’t need to pay developers or website development agencies to create a fully custom website for you.
There are many companies around the world that specialize in building WordPress compatible themes and all you need to do is to get the theme of your choice and install it on your WordPress.
You can find free blog themes online or paid themes.
Free Themes
If you have no money to start blogging about music, then you may want to start with a free theme just so you can get going.
There are many free themes out there.
The advantage of a free theme is that it is essentially free and will not cost you anything.
However, free themes do have drawbacks.
The downside of starting your blog based on a free theme is that you may quickly realize that you are unable to modify, tweak, or make changes to your blog as you learn more about blogging and grow.
In many cases, bloggers starting with a free theme will outgrow the theme very quickly and then will have to spend time and effort (and potentially compromise their search engine ranking) by moving to a premium theme.
Premium Themes
If you have some money to spare (generally less than $100), you may definitively want to invest in a great-looking paid theme.
By immediately starting with a premium theme, you know that you will be able to keep the theme for years to come and substantially grow your blog without having to make any changes.
The downside is that you have to put a little bit of money to get the paid theme but I think it’s worth the investment.
After all, who can start a business without putting any money into it?
An initial investment of less than $100 is surely worth all the future upside that you can benefit from.
The list below summarizes the key advantages of paying for a blog theme:
- Your blog will look unique and amazing
- Premium themes are generally user-friendly
- Your theme is already optimized for mobile
- Your pages will load fast
- You will have customer support
- You get updates to your theme
- You’ll probably pay less than $100
- Your blog will look professional
For this blog that I operate, I bought my theme for about $70 (and I love it!)
I have written on my review of premium themes for a new blogger to get started, so make sure you read it!
Theme Selection Considerations
If you can find a good theme giving you a nice look, professional design, and is clean, you are on the right track.
In general, if you can find a theme that allows you to host a fast and responsive website for desktop and mobile devices, you will cover the essentials.
In addition to that, if you can have good customization capabilities and the freedom to tweak your theme to present your website in a way that suits your needs, you have made a good choice for your theme.
Overall, you’ll want to see the following elements in your theme:
- Speed (fast loading pages)
- Responsiveness (mobile, tablets, notebooks, laptops, and desktop)
- Design (you want a beautiful design)
- Customizable (you want to have the ability to customize the look and fee of your theme)
- Technical Support (you want your theme provider to give good support)
- Reviews (you want your theme to have good reviews)
- Brand (you want your theme provider to be reputable in the space)
I also have a step-by-step tutorial on how to install your theme on WordPress if you want to learn more about that, you’ll see it’s not that complicated!
Here are some elements to consider when choosing the blog theme that is right for you:
- Are you paying an affordable price for the theme
- Is your theme designed to be responsive for mobile
- Can you easily customize your theme
- Do you have support and maintenance services
- How fast will your theme pages load on mobile, tablet, and desktop
Step 6: Do Your Keyword Research
You have now found your niche, selected and registered your domain, signed up for web hosting, installed WordPress, and got yourself a great theme for WordPress.
Congratulations, you’ve done the technical work!
Now, you should focus on writing amazing content for your music blog.
Writing content may appear daunting at first, but with enough practice and patience, you’ll produce great work, trust me.
When I started, I was having a hard time.
However, I did not give up.
I kept on researching my topic and wrote blog posts after blog posts.
With sufficient research and content creation experience, I become more and more knowledgeable in my blog topics.
Today, I’ve started multiple blogs on different topics that are netting me thousands of dollars per month.
If I did it, you can do it too.
Search Engine Ranking
To write effectively, you will need to spend time finding the right keywords.
The better you target your keywords, the more search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, and others will find you relevant when a user searches for those terms.
Eventually, you will end up on the first page of the search engine results page and will see your organic traffic go through the roof.
If you want to make your time investment in writing for your blog to count, my advice is to do proper keyword research so you know what key terms and phrases to target.
I have a detailed overview of how to do proper keyword research to target the best keywords for your blog posts, you must absolutely check it out!
Your Audience Needs
This is crucial if you want visitors to land your website.
Think about what your audience is searching for.
What terms will your audience type in a search engine?
For example, a person for how to make a music blog, may type the following keywords:
- WordPress music blogs
- How to create a music blog
- Google music blog
- Starting a music blog
- Music blog ideas
To get traffic to your site, focus on relevant music keywords (long-tail ones particularly) where you can get quick wins.
Remember, the music industry is highly competitive and you will be competing with powerful brands.
Define a good content strategy for yourself, work hard, and persevere.
There are also keyword research tools that you can use to help you find and target the content of your blog posts.
If you’re interested in finding a keyword research tool, I have a comprehensive guide on this topic.
Consider your blog to be a business.
Take time to define a plan for yourself, do your keyword research, read about what your competing blogs are writing about, understand what interests your readers, and produce content that will attract them to your blog.
With regards to keyword research, here are a few considerations:
- Is your audience searching for the keyword or keyphrase that you are targeting
- Are you targeting key terms with sufficiently large search volumes
- Are the keywords you are targeting highly competitive or not
Step 7: Learn About SEO
I’ve put SEO as an important step in successfully launching a personal music blog because I think that it’s through SEO that you can grow your blog over time (potentially in a compounded way).
Search Engine Optimization
SEO stands for “search engine optimization”.
Search engine optimization is the process where you draft content that will be recognized, indexed, and properly understood by search engines to be relevant to your blog topic.
The more you are able to write in an SEO-friendly manner, the more you have the chance that search engines will find you.
Think about it.
If your blog does not appear on the first page of Google, Bing, Yahoo, or other search engines, nobody will ever find you when they do a search online.
You absolutely need to do what’s necessary to appear on the first page of Google and you can do that through search engine optimization (by writing SEO-friendly blog posts).
The more you are able to rank higher on search engines, the more you will get visitors to your site.
SEO Strategies
The reason why SEO is strategic to the growth of your blog for music bloggers is that you will get a constant stream of organic traffic.
“Organic” traffic is the traffic that search engines send to your website for free!
For example, if you rank number one for a particular keyword or appear as a featured snippet, you will naturally get many visitors clicking through and visiting your site.
With the right SEO strategy, you can potentially bring thousands of people to your website every day.
On my blogs, I am able to bring thousands of visitors (every single day) without spending any money advertising or promoting my site.
That’s awesome…

As for me, today I have acquired significant expertise in SEO and I can confidently say that I can write blog articles and posts that can rank on the first page of Google and search engines consistently.
With regards to your SEO, consider applying: Here are some SEO points to consider:
- On-page SEO techniques
- Off-page SEO techniques
Step 8: Create Essential Pages
Your blog can also have key pages, such as:
- Contact Page
- About Us
- Legal Pages
Contact Page
A contact page is where you will provide the means for your audience to reach out to you or communicate with you.
It can be as simple as a contact us form where a user will put their name, email address, and message.
Make sure that your music blog has a contact page so people have a way to reach out to you for your ebooks, promotional products, guides, or just to ask you questions.
About Us
Then, you need the About Us page.
On the About Us page, you can quickly present yourself, talk about why you started the blog, and what you are hoping to achieve.
If your audience can connect with you on a more personal level, you may be in a better position to create a rapport with them and build a loyal following.
Legal Pages
The legal pages include your Privacy Policy, Terms of Use, Disclaimers, or other related legal pages.
You may want to consider your blog operations and see what legal pages you need to include at first.
You can always add the necessary pages as your blog grows.
You can find free online tools to help you make your privacy policy or terms of use.
Step 9: Start Your Music Blogging Adventure
The most important part of blogging is to produce amazing blog articles.
Your blog posts represent the assets that you create on your blog where you provide knowledge and value to your audience.
Do not underestimate this process.
You need to regularly produce great content, consistently.
Try to write about the topic of your core focus.
When you write, make sure that your content is engaging, easy to read, and comprehensive on the topic.
Sometimes, you may want to write short blog posts, but other times you’ll need to cover a topic in detail.
Try to focus on your music niche on every single article you write.
Don’t forget, if you are interested in getting into the blog business and making a name for yourself in the blogosphere, you need to write, write, and write!
At first, you may not have a good understanding of your style.
However, with time, you’ll hone in on your writing style.
Some blogs write to their readers in the first person whereas other blogs are more formal.
You need to experiment and see what works best for you.
As a general rule, if you write on topics that can help solve a problem, allow someone to explore opportunities, or get entertained, you will succeed at blogging.
Music Blog Categories
Depending on the focus of your blog, you can write about:
- Music reviews
- Best new music
- Music videos
- Music festivals
- Music albums
- Local music
- International music
- Risking music stars
- Tracks
- Music careers
- Music business
And so on…
In looking at YourEDM, I can see the following blog topics on their site:
- Music news
- Interviews
- House music
- Bass music
- Trance music
- Music free downloads
These are some categories that can give you more ideas to get going.
Step 10: Grow Your Blog Audience
There are many ways you can promote your blog to grow your audience.
Let’s look at some of the main strategies.
Search Engine Optimization
Growing your blog means that you should immediately think about writing content that is good for your SEO.
Content that ranks on the first page of search engines is generally properly optimized for search engine ranking.
Even though it may take many months (sometimes years) to have a decent amount of organic traffic coming to your site, you should focus on SEO right from the beginning.
Family And Friends
If you have a good circle of family and friends, don’t hesitate to have them help you out!
Whenever you write an article, share it with your friends and family so they can share it with people that they know.
Slowly but surely, you will start seeing some traffic to your site and people will start to get to know you.
Email List
The more you get traffic to your site, the more you can collect your visitor’s email addresses so you can share your future content with them.
Creating an email list will provide an absolutely amazing boost to your site traffic.
Want to know how you can grow your email list to drive traffic to your blog, check out my ultimate guide on how to start an email list.
Evergreen Content
To ensure the long-term organic growth of your blog, make sure you write enough evergreen content.
Evergreen content is a type of content that does not get old or age with time.
For example, if you write content on music history, your content will not change over time as history will not change over time.
On the other hand, if you are writing about the current musical trends, you may eventually see that your articles are no longer relevant when the trends evolve or shift with time.
You can make money with evergreen content, be sure to have many evergreen articles in your portfolio.
Step 11: Make Money
