Keep reading as we have gathered exactly the information that you need!

Let’s see how you can create a political blog and make money!

Are you ready?

Let’s get started!

How To Start A Political Blog

You love politics, you love writing, and want to share your ideas and knowledge with the world?

Did you know that close to half of the American adults read political blogs!

By starting a political blog, you can tap into a huge market just in the United States, build yourself a massive following, share your ideas, and make money in the process.

Politics blogging may exactly be what you need!

What is a political blog you may ask?

A political blog is a type of blog where you discuss various topics related to politics, such as:

  • Political decision-making
  • Political science
  • The history of politics
  • Different political systems
  • Various levels of politics

And more…

Blogging is a great way to express yourself, share ideas, and tell the world what you think or how you perceive things.

With more and more people on the Internet and consuming political information online, here are some reasons why starting your own political blog can be beneficial for you:

  • You can express your views
  • You can write about a topic that you are passionate about
  • You can create a following of like-minded people
  • Enhance your writing skills
  • Most importantly, make money

Keep in mind that political blogging is going to be competitive.

If you are a journalist, politician, activist, or a person deeply involved in the political world, you may have an edge (although anyone can succeed by working hard).

In addition to that, you can turn your politic blog into a money-making machine so you can turn your passion into a steady stream of passive income.

In this article, I will share with you the steps you need to take to start a political blog from the ground up.

In summary, here is the list of the steps that I will cover:

  1. Select your “politics” niche
  2. Register your politic-related domain name
  3. Host your blog on politics
  4. Install your blogging platform
  5. Find a website template
  6. Find keywords related to your niche
  7. Understand SEO
  8. Create key pages for your site
  9. Write your political content
  10. Drive traffic to your blog
  11. Make money blogging

Let’s dive right in!

Step 1: Select Your Political Blog Niche

The first thing you need to think about when looking to get a blog started related to politics is to decide on your blog niche.

Political Niche

“Politics” is a vast topic and you should not randomly write about different political subjects without having a clear plan.

The best strategy is to focus on a particular topic or niche.

For example, do you want to write about political systems?

Do you want to do political culture or conflicts?

Are you looking to share your personal opinion with the world on the topic?

You can write about so many things like:

  • Political approaches, such as extensive vs limited, moralism vs realism, conflict and co-operation
  • Prehistoric politics
  • Different political systems, such as states, constitutions, dysfunctions
  • Macropolitics, metapolitics, or micropolitics
  • Democracy, equality, freedoms
  • International political blog
  • Local politics
  • Conservative or liberal politics blog
  • Political news blog
  • Political opinion blog
  • Political commentary blog
  • Election overview

Your Audience

It’s important that you choose a niche to start blogging so you know to which audience you are catering.

Depending on the political angle you take for your blog (if you do political news vs analytic posts on politics), you may have to adopt a different type of writing style catered to the masses or intellectuals.

Depending on your writing skills, you should consider your niche carefully and decide if you want to create original content, report news, curate content, or aggregate the latest trending political events.

Then, as your audience and readership grow, you can start expanding into new political blogging niches (and more competitive ones).

Some possible angles you can take are to provide guides, share your expertise on the subject, review political articles written by others, become a critic, or more.

You may find inspiration by scanning personal political blogs, independent political blogs, or other good political blogs that you can find to identify core topics on which you will start blogging.

Here are some tips for you to find your niche in politics:

  • Think about what is the purpose of your blog
  • What information do you want to share with your audience
  • What are the top political blogs writing about
  • How can you provide value to your blog visitors

Step 2: Find Your Political Blog Domain Name

Once you’ve selected your niche, the next step is to think about your political blog domain name.

Your domain name is the web address that online users will type in their browser to access your blog or what will appear on the search engine results page.

For my blog here, I chose a domain name that is directly relevant to the topic of my blog (passive income).

Domain Extension

Ideally, if you can find a domain name that is relevant to your topic and as a .com extension, you’re off to a great start.

For instance, if you can name your blog “Political Blog.com”, try to go for that as you have the .com extension.

If you can’t find a .com extension, try to find one that you are comfortable with.

Within the politics space, there are other types of extensions such as .democrat or .republican that may work but they not as popular as the .com extensions.

Domain Name

Your political blog domain name should be broad enough that it will allow you to expand the political topics you cover over time.

If your domain name is too specific, then you’ll appear highly relevant for a specific topic and less on others.

For example, if you register the domain “History of Politics In The United States.com”, you may have chosen something too specific.

Choose something like “Political History” if you want to focus on this specific topic on your blog.

Another key piece of advice is to keep your domain name as short and to the point as possible.

You want your users to easily remember your blog name and URL (the more complicated you make it, the more people will have a hard time remembering your blog name).

Sometimes, it may be difficult to find the perfect name for your blog on politics.

In that case, you can get creative by adding qualifiers or additional words like “The Political Blogger” instead of “Political Blogger” alone.

Domain Naming Tips

Here are some tips in choosing your domain name:

Try to find a .com extension if you can.

For example, “Independent Political Bog.com”, “Political News Blog.com”.

Choose a name that is broad enough so you can cover topics beyond the initial niche you target.

For example, “Political Commentary Blog”.

Try to keep your domain name short and to the point.

Use alliterations like words that sound the same or have the same letter.

For example, “Political Persuasion” or “Power of Politics”.

Add qualifying words or extra words like “The” or “Insider”.

For example, “The Political Blog” or “The Political Insider”.

If you really have no idea what to name your politics blog, you can opt for a name generation tool such as Instant Domain Search and Lean Domain Search to help you out.

When choosing your domain name, try to be as creative as you can, think of the future of your blog, and in which direction you may want to go.

Don’t try to find the most perfect name and get stuck at this stage.

Spend some time to find the right domain name but don’t overdo it.

Be sure to consult my step-by-step guide on how to buy your domain name for beginners in a cheap and affordable manner.

Popular Political Blogs

To give you some ideas in finding your political blog domain name, it’s worth looking at a few of the top political blogs out there for inspiration.

Here are some of the popular political blogs:

  • PoliticusUSA
  • News Buster
  • The Gateway Pundit
  • The Political Insider
  • Politico
  • News Busters
  • Gateway Pundit
  • The Political Insider
  • HotAir
  • Talking Points Memo
  • Red State
  • Red State Watcher
  • Red Alert Politics
  • iPolitics

Domain Name Considerations

Once you have found your name, you should buy your domain name to ensure that it’s yours.

You can work with many domain name registrars to purchase the domain suitable for you.

Once you’ve purchased your domain, make sure you renew your domain name once the term of your purchase expires to avoid losing it.

Here are a few considerations when choosing your political domain name:

  • Is your name broad enough to cover many topics on politics
  • Can you find a short and descriptive domain name
  • Are you able to register for a .com extension

Step 3: Choose Your Web Hosting Service Provider

Once you chose your blog name and were able to purchase your domain name, you now need to get yourself web hosting services.

A web host is a company that provides you “hosting” services or allows your blog to be live and accessible on the Internet.

A web hosting company provides you with an online “space” where you can house your blog.

A host is essentially a server or computer where you install all your blog files and content.

Consider a web host to rent you the online space (land) you need to build your blog website (house).

Why do you need web hosting?

You need to have a good web hosting service so that your blog can be up and running all the time and accessible to the world (and Internet users).

There are many amazing web hosting services out there that can get you started with a few dollars a month and offer you quality and reliable services.

You are way better off paying $5 to $10 a month and having a web hosting service provider manage the hosting of your blog than you handling it yourself (which can be complicated and expensive).

I have a step-by-step tutorial on how to host your website, so be sure to check it out!
Author

Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you select the best possible web hosting plan:

  • Are you dealing with a reliable hosting company
  • Don’t pay for more than you need to start a blog
  • Will the hosting provider guarantee that your server will be up for more than 99.5% of the time
  • Do you have a dashboard to control the backend of your server

Step 4: Select Your Blogging Platform

Now, let’s discuss what blogging platform that you need.

You have several blogging platform options, such as:

  • Using a free blogging platform
  • Paying for a blogging platform
  • Using WordPress to self-host your blog

WordPress

Although you have various options, my recommendation is that you use WordPress as your blogging platform.

WordPress is a system that allows you to manage the backend of your blog (consider it to be your blog cockpit).

It’s like the car that will allow you to drive on the blogging road.

I recommend that you use WordPress for multiple reasons:

  • It is a free blogging platform
  • It is easy to use (user-friendly)
  • Over 60% of all websites in the world are built over WordPress
  • You can extend its functionalities through countless awesome plugins
  • You can purchase tons of great looking political blog themes build for WordPress
  • You can use WordPress to monetize your blog
  • You can add e-commerce capabilities to your blog

Free Blogging Platforms

If you don’t go with WordPress, you have the option of going with free blogging platforms.

Using free blogging platforms may not be ideal for you to start your politics blog (unless you really don’t like WordPress for some reason).

You will not have the flexibility and richness of features offered by WordPress, you will have less freedom to properly define the look and feel of your blog, and most importantly, you may not be able to monetize it to its full potential going forward.

I don’t personally recommend that you use a free blogging platform if you’re looking to start blogging about politics seriously for the following reasons:

  • You may not get ranked as well on the first page of search engines
  • You do not own your blog
  • When you’re ready to make money with your blog, you will be limited in your options
  • Your blog will not have a professional look and feel
  • You may not be able to extend the features and capabilities of your site
  • You end up promoting the free blogging platform through all your efforts instead of your own blog

Unless you have no money at all and don’t feel like learning WordPress (which is pretty user-friendly), then you should consider a free blogging platform.

Paid Blogging Platforms

You may elect to go with a paid blogging platforms such as Wix, Squarespace, or other.

Using a paid blogging platform or content management system can get the job done but why pay for something that may not perform as well as the far superior (and free) WordPress platform.

If you are new to blogging and you want to start a blog giving you the ability to scale, I’d tell you to go with WordPress hands down.

You are better off self-hosting your blog than paying for the service or using a basic free blog platform.

Step 5: Choose A Politics Blog Theme

What is a blog theme or website theme?

A theme is essentially a website template or a template that will define the look and feel of your blog.

You can buy themes for pretty much any type of website such as personal finance blogs, news blogs, sports, business, food, you name it.

The biggest advantage of using a theme as a template to build your website is that you don’t need to pay developers or website development agencies to create a fully custom website for you.

There are many companies around the world that specialize in building WordPress compatible themes and all you need to do is to get the theme of your choice and install it on your WordPress.

You can find free blog themes online or paid themes.

Free Themes

If you have no money to start blogging about politics, then you may want to start with a free theme just so you can get going.

There are many free themes out there.

The advantage of a free theme is that it is essentially free and will not cost you anything.

However, free themes do have drawbacks.

The downside of starting your blog based on a free theme is that you may quickly realize that you are unable to modify, tweak, or make changes to your blog as you learn more about blogging and grow.

In many cases, bloggers starting with a free theme will outgrow the theme very quickly and then will have to spend time and effort (and potentially compromise their search engine ranking) by moving to a premium theme.

Premium Themes

If you have some money to spare (generally less than $100), you may definitively want to invest in a great-looking paid theme.

By immediately starting with a premium theme, you know that you will be able to keep the theme for years to come and substantially grow your blog without having to make any changes.

The downside is that you have to put a little bit of money to get the paid theme but I think it’s worth the investment.

After all, who can start a business without putting any money into it?

An initial investment of less than $100 is surely worth all the future upside that you can benefit from.

Here are some benefits of using premium themes:

  • You can find great looking and unique designs
  • Premium themes are designed in a way allowing you to use them in an easy and user-friendly manner
  • Your theme will come optimized for mobile
  • Your theme will be light-weight and SEO-friendly
  • You can benefit from customer support in case you have issues with your theme
  • You benefit from regular maintenance and updates offered by the theme developer
  • Great premium themes can be found for under $100
  • Your blog has a professional look

I currently run this blog on a premium theme that I purchased for about $70 and I’m absolutely happy and satisfied with it.

I have written on my review of premium themes for a new blogger to get started, so make sure you read it!

Theme Selection Considerations

If you can find a good theme giving you a nice look, professional design, and is clean, you are on the right track.

In general, if you can find a theme that allows you to host a fast and responsive website for desktop and mobile devices, you will cover the essentials.

In addition to that, if you can have good customization capabilities and the freedom to tweak your theme to present your website in a way that suits your needs, you have made a good choice for your theme.

Overall, you’ll want to see the following elements in your theme:

  • Speed (fast loading pages)
  • Responsiveness (mobile, tablets, notebooks, laptops, and desktop)
  • Design (you want a beautiful design)
  • Customizable (you want to have the ability to customize the look and fee of your theme)
  • Technical Support (you want your theme provider to give good support)
  • Reviews (you want your theme to have good reviews)
  • Brand (you want your theme provider to be reputable in the space)
I also have a step-by-step tutorial on how to install your theme on WordPress if you want to learn more about that, you’ll see it’s not that complicated!
Author

Here are some elements to consider when choosing the blog theme that is right for you:

  • Is the theme within your budget
  • Is the theme responsive for mobile
  • Can you easily customize your theme
  • Do you get support services from the theme provider
  • Will your theme pages quickly load on desktop or mobile devices

Step 6: Do Your Keyword Research

At this point in time, you’ve decided on our political niche, chose your domain name and bought your domain name through your registrar, you signed up for an amazing and affordable web hosting, installed WordPress on your hosted server, and bought and installed your theme.

Your technical work is all complete, check!

You should now focus your attention on writing the best content possible for your blog on politics.

When I started blogging, I quickly figured out how to get my blog hosted and managed the technical side of things.

However, I did not know how to write great blog posts.

I spend a lot of time researching and trying to learn the best techniques and best practices in writing content that will not only please my audience but also will get ranked on the first page of search engines like Google, Bing, or other.

If you want to make your time investment in writing for your blog to count, my advice is to do proper keyword research so you know what key terms and phrases to target.

I have a detailed overview of how to do proper keyword research to target the best keywords for your blog posts, you must absolutely check it out!
Author

This is crucial if you want visitors to land your website.

One way is to think about your audience persona and try to predict what type of search terms they may key into Google or search engines to find relevant websites for their search.

If you want to write about modern politics, you may want to target long-tail keywords that have a high volume of searches per month and are not as competitive.

There are also keyword research tools that you can use to help you find and target the content of your blog posts.

If you’re interested in finding a keyword research tool, I have a comprehensive guide on this topic.
Author

If you spend a little bit of time before writing your blog posts to do your keyword research, you will put all the chances on your side to write about something that online users are searching for and interested in reading about.

Here are some aspects to consider when doing your keyword research:

  • Is your audience searching for the keyword or keyphrase that you are targeting
  • Are you targeting key terms with sufficiently large search volumes
  • Are the keywords you are targeting highly competitive or not

Step 7: Learn About SEO

I’ve put SEO as an important step in successfully launching a personal politics blog because I think that it’s through SEO that you can grow your blog over time (potentially in a compounded way).

SEO stands for “search engine optimization”.

Essentially, by writing your content optimized for SEO, you are adopting techniques and strategies allowing search engines to index your blog posts and have your pages appear on the first page of the search engine results page.

If you want people to find your blog and political pages, you must work hard to have Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other search engines present your website on the first page (ideally the top of the first page).

The higher you rank on search engines, the more you’ll have visitors on your site, the higher your click-through rate, the more you can create a loyal audience that keeps coming back, and the more you can monetize your blog.

The reason why SEO is strategic to the growth of your blog operated by political bloggers is that you will get a constant stream of organic traffic.

Organic traffic refers to site visitors that come to your website totally free.

In other words, with proper on-page and off-page SEO techniques, you can have search engines recognize you as the most relevant website on your topic and keep sending you traffic on an ongoing basis.

If you do your homework on SEO, every article you write can potentially bring hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors to your site.

I have a portfolio of websites where I have grown my traffic to hundreds of thousands of visitors per month by implementing SEO best practices and using SEO tools.

If you’re interested to learn more about SEO and how you can take your organic traffic to a whole new level, check out my step-by-step guide to understand SEO.

Although you don’t need to become an SEO expert before writing your first political blog post, you should certainly put some time into learning SEO as you work on your blog and get more experience.

I did not know about SEO when I started but I have now acquired specialized expertise allowing me to take my skills and knowledge to write content on pretty much any topic and hit the first page of the search engine results page.

Here are some SEO points to consider:

  • Have you implemented proper on-page SEO techniques
  • Have you implemented proper off-page SEO techniques

Step 8: Create Key Pages On Your Website

Your blog can also have key pages, such as:

  • Contact Page
  • About Us
  • Legal Pages

A contact page is where you will provide the means for your audience to reach out to you or communicate with you.

It can be as simple as a contact us form where a user will put their name, email address, and message.

Make sure that your political blog has a contact page so people have a way to reach out to you for your ebooks, promotional products, guides, or just to ask you questions.

Then, you need the About Us page.

On the About Us page, you can quickly present yourself, talk about why you started the blog, and what you are hoping to achieve.

If your audience can connect with you on a more personal level, you may be in a better position to create a rapport with them and build a loyal following.

The legal pages include your Privacy Policy, Terms of Use, Disclaimers, or other related legal pages.

You may want to consider your blog operations and see what legal pages you need to include at first.

You can always add the necessary pages as your blog grows.

You can find free online tools to help you make your privacy policy or terms of use.

Step 9: Start Political Blogging

Without a doubt, the most important part of your blogging journey and the success of your blog is the political content that you write and publish.

What you write is what will attract an audience to your blog.

If you write something (related to your politics niche) in an engaging, easy-to-understand, and comprehensive manner, you will have more and more visitors to your site.

A blog, by its nature, is a type of website that allows you to write content presented in reverse chronological order.

This means that what you publish today will appear on top of your blog and the older content fall below it.

Generally, if you write content that helps solve your audience’s problem, allows them to explore an opportunity, or provides them with useful or entertaining content, you will hit the mark.

Political Blog Categories

Depending on the focus of your blog, you can write about:

  • Political commentary
  • Political analysis from a liberal point of view
  • US politics
  • Rank other blogs on politics
  • Conservative view of politics
  • Individual liberty
  • Free markets
  • Power centers in the world
  • Political news

And so on…

In looking at Politico, I can see the following blog categories on their site:

  • Political news
  • Election results
  • White House
  • Political Policy
  • Political Cartoons
  • Political Events
  • Women In Politics

These are some categories that can give you more ideas to get going.

Step 10: Grow Your Blog Audience

When starting out as a new political blogger, you should focus on writing about topics that can generate traffic to your site.

If you write about things that people are not interested in reading about, you will not get much traffic.

Without traffic, even the best content in the world will not have any readership.

There are many techniques and methods that you can use to grow your audience and traffic to your blog, such as:

  • Writing about topics that interest people
  • Sharing your blog posts with your family and friends so they can share them with others
  • Writing content that is easy to consume and digest
  • Doing proper keyword research to find the best topics to write about

Keyword Research

I have grown my audience to my blogs by doing keyword research to understand what people are typing into Google and other search engines on the topic of passive investing.

You are probably here on my blog as you may have typed in a search keyword or key phrases that I had in mind when I was writing this blog post.

Be sure to do proper keyword research (particularly quality long-tail keywords) so you can quickly get visibility to your blog.

Search Engine Optimization

Another key aspect in growing your audience is to learn and understand SEO.

Statistics show that nearly everyone will end up clicking on a link presented on the first page of Google or the search engine results (very few will go to see results on the second page, and less on the third page).

To get traffic to your blog organically and sustainably, you need search engines to find your content relevant and useful enough for its users to be presented on the first page.

You can grow your blog’s political audience by promoting your blog online.

Think about sharing your blog posts and political content with your family and friends.

Use social media to gain further traction on your blog.

Become a member of political clubs where you can share your ideas, meet like-minded people, and expand your network of connections.

Offer your site visitors something of value so they can register to your newsletter or want to receive your blog posts by email whenever you publish.

By growing your email list, you can then further drive traffic to your new blog articles by sending an email notification to your audience.

Evergreen Content

To ensure the long-term organic growth of your blog, make sure you write enough evergreen content.

Evergreen content is a type of content that does not get old or age with time.

For example, if you write content on political history, you are sure that it’s going to be evergreen as history will not change.

On the other hand, if you write political news articles, you’ll need to constantly publish fresh content as search engines prefer presenting fresh news information rather than stale ones.

With evergreen content, you also benefit from the possibility of earning an evergreen passive income, amazing…

Step 11: Make Money With Your Political Blog

The ultimate step in building a new political blog is to eventually make money from it.

Monetize Your Blog

Yes, with your blog on politics, you have the potential of making good money.

Depending on your financial objectives, you can work to make extra cash to complement your revenues or even potentially making political blogging your full-time job.

There are many political bloggers that are successfully earning awesome money through their blog through display advertisement, affiliate marketing, publication of e-books, teaching gigs, or others.

Think about it, your blog is a platform that you can potentially bring thousands of people to your website.

If you do things properly, you can monetize your blog, build a following, sell valuable services and informational products to them, refer them to related products and services to earn affiliate marketing commission, and more.
